While researching about using earthworms to literally eat toxic waste and make polluted land usable again, I came upon this very interesting video about worms being used for just that. As you'll see in the video, the worms don't quite have a happy ending, but they are able to clean the land in question over the course of only two years, completely naturally. My dad used to work for various chemical companies (some good some bad) that often encountered cleanup challenges, and I remember him telling me about using various critters to clean up toxic waste; this is a perfect example of that. The folks in this video used only about 300 pounds of worms, plus an extra 100 pounds the second year, to clear a large swath of land. It's fascinating. Well, it's fascinating to me, a woman who wades through thousands of worms and hundreds of pounds of poop daily (worm, horse, cow... and child if we're being specific...).
Use your worms for making worm compost, but keep little tidbits like this in the back of your mind for cocktail parties, friendly encounters, and latent plans about how you'll survive the end of the world. :-)
