I have a few Worm Compost challenges going on right now, so I thought I would provide a quick update about how things are going.
Worm Compost Challenge: Cat Poop
I checked on my bin yesterday about a week after burying the cat poop and corn-based litter. I was a little surprised to find that it was about halfway gone! So far the worms in that area seem happy, though they are not attacking it as they would horse manure. It didn't smell very nice, but cat poop stinks pretty badly, so that's not very surprising. I'll check the ph soon from that little pocket of the bin and report back.
Worm Compost Challenge: Can I Put Meat In My Worm Bin?
The buried meatball has basically been untouched by the worms. Surprisingly, it doesn't stink too badly after being buried for almost two weeks. It is covered with white mites (of the "helper" variety), but the worms don't seem interested at all yet.
Worm Compost Challenge: How Many Worms?
So far my boys are just hangin' out in their little mug of bedding and food. No babies or cocoons to report.
Worm Compost Challenge: Castings vs. Vermicompost vs. Potting Soil
I would say that the race in the seedling challenge is mostly neck in neck. We don't really have a clear winner yet. I just put them on the deck for some fresh air. Grow, little guys!
